Songs and Rhymes for Thanksgiving

Is it getting busy at your house? The holidays are sneaking up on all of us! Here are some poems and songs to sing with your children as you prepare for Thanksgiving.

Part of early literacy is exposing your children to poetry/rhymes/songs. Rhymes with repeated words, alliteration, rhythmic sounding words sung to familiar tunes are easy for your children to remember and repeat over and over. Rhymes and poetry that link to holidays provide background information just as books do. They are important too!

The following are Thanksgiving songs and rhymes :

Turkey Dinner (sung to Frere Jacques)
We eat turkey, we eat turkey.
Oh, so good, Oh, so good!
Always on Thanksgiving, Always on Thanksgiving,
Yum-yum-yum! Yum-yum-yum!
change the "turkey" to other favorites like mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie

5 Little Turkeys (Finger play)
5 little turkeys by the barn door, 1 waddled off and then there were 4.
4 Little turkeys out under the tree, 1 waddled off, then there were 3.
3 Little turkeys with nothing to do, 1 waddled off, then there were 2.
2 Little turkeys in the noonday sun, 1 waddled off, then there was one.
1 little turkey - better run away! Soon it will be Thanksgiving Day.

The Turkey (recite and act out)
"The turkey is a funny bird (stand with hands on hips)
His head goes wobble, wobble. (move your head back and forth)
And all he says is just one word... (hold up one finger)
Gobble-Gobble-Gobble!" (Gobble your best imitation!)

"If You're Thankful" (sing to "If You're Happy and You Know It" )
If you're thankful and you know it, clap you hands.
If you're thankful and you know it, clap your hands.
If you're thankful and you know it
Then you're face will surely show it
If your thankful and you know it clap you're hands."
add the following verses "Stomp your feet" Shout "I Am" "Do All Three"

"Im Thankful" (sing to "Row, Row, Your Boat)
"I'm thankful for my friends
And my family.
I'm thankful for the food I eat,
I'm happy to be me!"

Thanks for stopping by today, Susan
